Crosstown

Pedestrian tunnel closures at Yonge & Eglinton

Major construction is underway on the Crosstown’s future Eglinton Station, located at the Yonge & Eglinton intersection.

Building this station will be more complex than other stations because Eglinton will be constructed underneath the existing TTC Yonge subway line. We will first have to underpin and support the existing subway tunnels, in order to safely build around them and keep the subways running at the same time.

There are four pedestrian tunnels that enable underground access to and from the existing subway station to the four corners of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection. These tunnels are located directly where supports need to be installed, so all four of these tunnels need to be closed.

The ‘north’ and ‘east’ tunnels were closed in June 2017. The 'west’ pedestrian tunnel leading from the concourse level of the Eglinton subway station to RioCan’s Yonge-Eglinton Centre will be closed in September 2017. Finally, the ‘south’ tunnel will close sometime in 2018. All four of the pedestrian tunnels will remain closed until construction is complete in 2021. Pedestrians will be able to access Yonge & Eglinton’s businesses via their street-level entrances.

When the Eglinton LRT line is complete and in service in 2021, pedestrian flow to and from all four corners of the intersection via underground routes will be available once again, and LRT passengers will be able to connect seamlessly to and from the TTC’s Yonge subway line.
