Eglinton Avenue - South Side Sidewalk Closures

January 17, 2014

The Eglinton Crosstown is a transit project that will provide rapid and reliable service across Eglinton Avenue including an underground central section and will be up to 60% faster than bus service today.

What work is starting?

What: A long-term closure of the pathway to Eglinton Avenue from Aerodrome Crescent is required.

Initially, a short-term closure of the north side pedestrian walkway along Eglinton Avenue is required for approximately four to six weeks. The sidewalk on the south side of Eglinton will be open during this time.

Subsequently, a long-term closure of the south side pedestrian walkway on Eglinton Avenue is required for the construction of the Tunnel Boring Machine launch pit. The sidewalk on the north side of Eglinton will be open for pedestrian use.

When: Starting as early as January 20, 2014, crews will begin to occupy the site. The site will remain a construction zone for multiple years through several stages of the project.

Pedestrian Access:

For public safety, please watch for additional signs re-directing pedestrians. Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Barriers and other protection measures will be used to separate the work zone safely from the public.

Traffic Details:

Traffic lanes will be shifted to the north side of Eglinton Avenue between Brentcliffe Road and Leslie Street to allow construction crews to begin excavation of the shaft from the south side. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction along Eglinton Avenue East in the work zone east of Brentcliffe Road.

Construction Vehicle Access:

Construction vehicles will be accessing and exiting the work zone. Paid Duty officers or flag persons may be used as required to assist with traffic control.

Work Hours:

The hours of work as permitted by the City by-law are between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week, when required. Some overnight work may be required. Underground tunnelling and associated work may continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
