The Eglinton Crosstown is a transit project that will provide rapid and reliable service across Eglinton Avenue. It includes an underground central section from Keele Street to Don Mills Road, bringing transit service that will be up to 60% faster than bus service today.
What: Emergency Exit Building construction at Eglinton near Little Boulevard and Ronald Avenue. Emergency exit buildings are used to evacuate passengers from tunnels in the event of an emergency at track level. They require the construction of a shaft, a corridor and stairs leading to a small exit building at the surface.
Why: In addition to the headwalls, required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines, this emergency exit building includes the exit route or evacuation pathway, corridor and stairs, from tunnel level to the exit building located at the surface.
Where: Lane closures will continue to be in place on Eglinton Ave West at Little Boulevard. The north east corner of Eglinton and Little Boulevard, will continue to be used for staging this long term work.
When: Crews will continue to occupy north lanes of Eglinton Avenue for several months in the area of Ronald Avenue and Little Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue W to construct the corridor and shaft for the exit stairs of the emergency exit building.
Traffic will be slightly shifted to the north on Eglinton Ave over new road decking while traffic will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction. Little Boulevard will be closed for many months during this next stage of construction.
Pedestrian Access
Pedestrian walkways will remain open. For public safety, please use the south side of Eglinton Avenue during construction and watch for additional signs re-directing pedestrians. Please take care when travelling near construction areas.
Both eastbound and westbound TTC stops in the affected area will be relocated for the safety of the transit riders. Watch for posted signs indicating the new locations.
The hours of work permitted for this contract are between 7a.m. and 11p.m. Work is expected to take place Monday through Saturday. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.
